Cataloging Policy and Procedure Manual

Biography (Laura B)

Individual Biographies:
In order to enhance patrons' browsing efficiency, individual biographies will be exempted from the main Dewey Decimal classification scheme and will not be classed within the individual discipline or subject.  Individual biographies should be shelved together, separate from both the fiction and the Dewey Decimal non-fiction, and should physically be placed at the end of the non-fiction section.
Shelf marks to appear on the spine labels of these books will read 'B (individual's last name) (first three letters of author's last name)'.  For example, the spine label of a biography of Helen Keller written by George Sullivan should read:
B
Keller
Sul
Individual biographies include autobiographies, diaries, reminiscences, and correspondence.
Individual biographies will be alphabetized together according to the last name on the spine label, then according to the last name of the book's author.  Unique call numbers on the spine labels are not necessary, but should include copy numbers, if applicable.

Collected Biographies:
Collected biographies will be classed in 920 undivided.  Call numbers, spine labels, and shelving will reflect '920 (first three letters of author's last name)'.
For example, a collected biography of famous Americans written by Sheila Keenan should be classed as
920
